I recently installed Win XP to a second partition on my hard drive and updated it with SP1 from microsoft's web site.

Soon began getting error messages (see below)in XP about display driver(s) issues.

Thinking to resolve the problem with nvidia's update support, I downloaded their newest XP graphics driver and foolishly followed their instructions to delete the old driver before installing the update. Unsed control panel- add/remove uninstall and clicked ok to restart, system reboots...

Now I see only a blank screen and haven't been able to install display driver update from XP desktop.

XP os seems to complete the full boot but I can't see the desktop/GUI for lack of video driver.

I've tried installing new XP display drivers from Win98 side but it fails.

Have used all the F8 options hoping Win XP will recover GUI and/or find and fix the missing driver problem but no luck.

Can't get a command prompt or 'last good start up', the system seems unable to complete the boot process in safe mode. Using boot log option, system hangs at "MU process' line- no boot into safe mode either.

How can I do a system restore when I can't see the option?

Maybe I could get a command prompt and type in DOS intructions telling Win Xp to grab and install the new display driver files...if I could get a command prompt. How do I get a comand prompt in DOS some other way?

Can anyone help me out with this?

I don't have boot disks and the installed Win XP os will not accept the same validation code when I try to reinstall XP from my Win 98 side, to repair the missing files.

Noob offers thanks in advance for good advice...

Well the original error says it plain enough that there was a failure with your graphics card. But you are stating that the win98 os is working fine on the dual boot setup. so that positively says it is strickly driver issues. My suggestion is to shut down the computer open it up and pull out the card. Then resat the card firmly and make sure it is properly locked down, Then reboot and see if found new hardware will allow it to be used with M$ drivers. If that doesn't work then remove the card and reset CMOS to clear bios and try it again. It should allow M$ drivers to operate the card till you get the new drivers installed.

Thanks lurkswithin for your good tips'

Ultimately I had to remove the MX440 card and put an old SIS pci card in to get XP to recognize and feed my monitor again. That got me back to the gui and control panel so I could install the nvidia update drivers.

Whew! What a hassle, in following nividia's on screen instructions to: 'Uninstall old graphics driver files before installing updates'. It caused quite a problem here.

Thank you and all the good helers at Computing.net. You are very kind to share your knowledge and assistance to us noob and goober types.
