I tried rebooting from Windows XP SP2 original
disc which I had installed previously. It
checked all the files as was seen on the

Either your hard drive has died, your hard drive controller has died or your BIOS is not setup properly. Lets hope for the latter. Go into your BIOS and see if it is set to automatic detect for hard drive 0. If it is check the connectors to your hard drive and make sure they have not come lose. If that fails take your hard drive to a friends computer and see if it can be detected. If not then you will know were the problem is. I hope you do backups.
