I was just looking in my system events to make sure that nothing was popping up to be concerned about, well, I found something. Last night at 11:00, this message was there: The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. So, I am freaking out now. i'm running winxp and have been for about two weeks now without probs. Do I really have to replace my hd?? Is there anything less invasive that I can do instead? I haven't defragged since I put on xp, and I have a ton of programs on here. Norton didn't find any viruses, and I scanned the disk for errors earlier yesterday. What could be the prob?

I really would recommend you back up your data . Harddrives now have this thing called SMART and it detects when harddrives are about to fail . . . . . . it probably is the way you are shutting down the computer. Do you just hit the power switch sometimes instead of shutting it down through windows ? cause this causes harddrives to fail.

Yeah, so I got the diag utility for my drive, and it basically says that the drive is hosed. OF course there is no tech support either today cause of the holiday. I basically have to get a new drive now. I think this time I'll get an IBM!!

Gosh, no, don't get an IBM. Seriously. Why do you think they just sold their HD division? The failure rate for their drives is extremely high. Get a Maxtor or Western Digital. Good products, good warranty. Regards.

Go to Control panel>admin tools>event viewer>system. It gives you a list of all the little things that start and stop and/or errors that occur while your system is running.
The drive I have is a Maxtor, and I love it, I'm going to try everything to save it. Could it be a driver problem that is doing this to the hd? I have gotten the error message about four times today so far, and it's not after any specific event like a shutdown or bootup or program run. I might try to just re-install the system.

P>S> I would try to replace it under my warranty, but we can't find any of the original packaging or receipt. Bah!

THe warrantee doesn't need the packaging. Just call the manufacture and have the reciept ready. They will tell you from there from the corresponding web site.

a good hdd diagnosis and rescue utility can be found on our friend steve gibson's site.
goto www.grc.com and try out spinrite. worked for me and maxtors rock, no more ibm for me.have a...
banana...

Yea, good news! My husband called the Maxtor people and they are sending me a new hard drive asap! Any advice tho on how to avoid these ad secotrs/blocks/failures in the future??
