HDD and DVD Drive 'dropping out'

Specs: Windows XP, 3GB
Hi Guys,

I have a Dell Vostro Desktop, it's just over 3 years old.

Recently the computer crashed with a BSOD. It would boot back upto the Windows Logon screen, then crash BSOD again. I did a clean wipe and install and was half way through installing all the programs. The DVD drive would not appear in My Computer, then it would appear and then disappear (sometimes in the middle of installing a program).

Then computer crashed again with the same BSOD. I did another clean install except this time DVD drive keeps dropping out during the copying of Windows files.

Also, the HDD takes about 2 hours to reformat - its under 500GB.

Any suggestions?

Boot from an XP CD, delete any partitions & format to NTFS.

Yea, I'm currently doing that for the third time.

It may get half way through copying the Windows files but then the CD will drop out.

Had to make sure you were deleting the partitions.

Sounds like the CD needs cleaning or reburning.
