Comment: I have an external Hard Drive which is 250 GB and which is recognized as such by XP (USB connected). Does this mean that if I replace one of my internal hard drives with a 250 or bigger, it will be recogized okay? Is this a way to check which file system is on my computer presently, FAT32 or NTSB? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)No that doesn't mean your computer is 48 bit LBA compliant. Look at the link below for more information about 48 bit LBA compliance. http://www.48bitlba.com/index.htm Unfortunately I don't know of any FREE utilities to check this out. I think most Intel MBoards have been compliant since 2001 or so. If you really need another harddrive and you have an open PCI slot on the MBoard you could do this. Buy the Harddrive and if the BIOS doesn't recognise it fully then buy a controller card. Another option would be to just buy a controller card to start. You can get controller cards to serve IDE or SATA or both. That way your drive will be easier to migrate to a new system in the future. Look below for examples. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

Reply: (edit)Visit www.48bitlba.com There is lots of info there on large drive limits that you might find interesting. This has little to do with the file system in use. By the way, it is NTFS not NTSB. I don't think the National Transport Safety Board is interested in your choice of file structure. Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

Reply: (edit)I'm not sure if this is what you were asking, but you can right click the C drive and choose properties. That will tell you which format for the hard drive(assuming the drive isn't partitioned).

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the responses. I did not think to check properties on the HDs. Both present ones are NTFS. I have a FIC VI13 MB but the manual doesn't address HD sizes or limits. I got the MB in 2003. The link to 48bitba.com did show a compliance test tool which I will try a little later. I sent an E-Mail to FIC asking the HD size question and hopefully they will give me a definitive answer. Thanks again.
