My system (XP) shut down for an unknown reason and does not reboot as the HD is not detected by the BIOSanymore (nor by XP repair tool that is on XP CD). I switched the power cables, IDE connectors and IDE cables but it doesn't change anything. Could that be due to a virus (on MBR)? Could the HD have burned? (it seems that it smelled like something had burned in the appartment) shortly after it shut down)? Could it have soemthing to do with the fact that I recently re-partitionned my HD (PM7)? Are there solutions to get the data out of the drive if it's dead?

If the drive is mechanically/electronically dead, you're gonna have an awful and or expensive time recovering data. I got lucky once and managed to swap the platters from a dead drive to a different shell and recover everything. there are places that "may" be able to do it for you but you can bet it will cost a fortune.
