First off "whats a nt file doing in xp?" Windows Xp is nt, version 5.1.200. It's the second version of Win2K.

If I remember right
"UpdReg c:\windows\updreg.exe All Users HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" is put there by soundblaster sound cards. If thats the case you don't need it. It's the registration reminder. This wouldn't cause your problem though.

Does this always happen or only after you leave the pc running for a while without using it?

It's a constant little blip of the HD light. It's always going no matter what or when. It's tiny, so not much is going on as compared to when large amounts of activity cause it to be fully lit. I previously had 2k on this machine and it never happened. The XP was a clean install. I formatted the partition that had 2k and then installed.

khaosgame is the name of my PC. I have multiple ones networked together. One for games and apps, another for testing called khaostest, a laptop named khaoslaptop, etc...

I was wondering if XP was running some sort of network prog that constantly was doing something. I've only been playing with this OS for a week now. Previously everything was either 2000 or 98SE.

While I may upgrade and build regularly, HDs do have a shelf life of around 10000 hours and I'm on this thing sometimes 8 hours a day, and generally I leave it up when not doing anything. I don't care to have my HD nipped to death.

The constant HDD LED blink is caused by CD Autorun continually scanning for a CD. To disable this start regedit, navigate to:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

change the value data of the AutoRun key to 0.
