Ok so I just bought a dell 9300 inspiron notebook with windows xp pro. Before this I was running windows me so things are quite a bit different.
My first problem and most anoying, I purchased a wireless logtech mouse and keyboard to make typeing and such easier. Well the mouse is screwy, even the touch pad is screwy some times. First problem, left click istn working properly. Cant view drop down menues, cant access buttons in ie such as back, refresh and everything else -left click basically doesnt work. Touch pad is working properly 50% of the time. I went into mouse properties located in control panel but I cant seem to find a resolution! Please help! Oh yeah I almost forgot on my previous computer I only had to click once no double clicking on anything is this possible on xp?
Second problem, IE is screwed up somehow. When I launch net from desktop 3 windows deploy, ie yahoo.com all the same. When I try and switch back and forth between pages Im only able to view the pages if I left click and move pointer over the page with left click held down, if I just click the window all it does is flicker and minimize faster than a speeding bullit. Since left click is screwed up all I can do is right click and close windows.
Also in IE when viewing a page, if I following a link and pop a new page when I go to close the new page all pages that were previously open close along with the new one. Keep in mind left click isnt working all along on logtech only on touch pade and ocasionally that doesnt work either.
Another IE problem, its not remembering my content settings. I went into internet options and disabled all of the child saftey crap but it continues to go back to the original settings. For instance I was viewing a page, the page was working fine, I followed a link out, when I came back all of the urls and such were disabled on the page.
Another problem Im noticing is that images really look like crap with jagged lines and lots of blur, Ive also noticed this with some text here and there. The notebook is a 17 inch widescreen but Ive looked at a screen of this size before and it looked fine.
Also if someone can post a link that can show me how to optimize the start up programs that would be great, I unchecked a few but there are several that I dont have a clue about.
I think I covered it all but Im so frustrated that Im probally missing something, please help!!!
Thanks,
Sleeves

Ok I just figured out that script debugging was enabeld wich was one of the problems with the left click, now at least I can left click an icon and see it get pressed down the only problem is it wont do anything after that. The button just stays down and for some reason I can use the middle scroll button on the mouse to click. I looked at mouse properties again, first button page is configured left - click, right - menues and middle - scrolling. Second button menue left is double click, right is menue and middle scroll is click. I tried switch the click and double click every possible way but when I match them up on the two tabs absolutely nothing works as far as left click is concerned.
Im close I can feel it can anyone help?
Thanks,
Sleeves

As for your single click, go to control panel>folder options>. You will see down at the bottom "click items as follows". You can select "single click", make sure that you click "apply" afterwards.
The only thing that I can think of off hand with your mouse would be did you also use the disk that came with mouse?
Hopfully someone else will come along that may know about laptops and their problems.

I purchased a wireless logtech mouse and keyboard to make typing and such easier with a laptop?
i_XpUser

yes with a laptop, i have big hands and the keyboard and touchpad present problems to me because there so small.

NP - I understand. I've never seen anything like this so it's all new to me Have you tried looking up the troubleshooting page at
Dell Support site?i_XpUser

To manage startup I love Win Patrol.
While there is a free version, you need to buy it but that is once and done forever for $20+ and then you can actually click on the startup[ entry and it will take you to their site, explain what the item is, whether or not is is necessary and so on. This "lookup" feature is the only difference from paid or unpaid and is well worth it. It keeps startup cloean going forward, prevents browser hijack and controls also file registers. One of my favorite programs!

Ok thanks everyone I figured out my problem and I feel stupid about it! The keyboard and mouse were purchased seperatly so they each had a plugin for the laptop, this morning I unplugged the adapter for the mouse and everything was fixed from there on. I had just got this thing in the mail yesterday and was excited to get it up and running witch is probally why I overlooked something so simple. Thanks again and thanks for the win patrol suggestion, I download tune up utilities 2004 but it doesnt tell me what the programs do and if I need them or not win patrol sounds right up my alley! Thanks sleeves

Well the laptop only takes usb plugins for aditional hardware. The mouse had just a small usb plugin that had a connect button on it and the keyboard had a usb plugin with a cord attached that goes to a little device that says conect. This morning without thinking twice all I did was unplug the usb plugin for the mouse leaving the one for the keyboard and then started the computer. I didnt have to try and configure anything once the computer started, everything just worked perfectly. I did notice last night before I got everything figued out that xp is very touchy when it comes to what you have check and uncheck in the internet options advanced tab. I also just downloaded win patrol and would suggest it to anyone like me that isnt sure whats what! Hope that helps. Thanks sleeves

Thanks for feedback...and yes Win Patrol is one of the most useful utility programs I have ever used.It really keeps control of your system over to you.
