Hi Members!

XP is the OS I use. Older Dad doesn't like change and has stayed with ME.-My problem--I have Windows 98 2nd just laying around. My first computer (166)had 95 on it. Back then I upgraded to 98. I have had this new computer for 3 years. I was wanting to put 98 on my drive H: . I have started the computer and quickly put in the 98 CD. The computer just goes to the menu showing which OS I want to log in to XP or ME. I hear the CD spin and that is all. I have NO response on the 98 CD.--- Does anyone have an idea for me to install 98. Maybe I am cooked and will not be able to install it.-O,---i have 2 free gigs on drive H:

Perhaps you can clarify things a little more...

Are you wishing to create a dual-boot XP/'98, or a triple boot XP/ME/'98?

If the latter then it's not an easy option without you use an add-in util. If a simple dual-boot then there are a few basic (dual-boot) conditions to consider.

How many (physical) hard-drives present in the PC in which you wish install '98?

How is each drive partitioned, and formatted - especially the c: (Primary) partition on the PC where you wish to install '98 (and also the H: drive/partition in question)?

What is already installed - and where?

Is the '98 CD bootable?

Another question is what drive structure do you have? How many, what partitions and are any of them NTFS. W98 will not install on a system that has ME or XP already installed and be able to provide a dual boot menu. Also if you manage to install it are any partitions currently in NTFS format? None of this will be visible to 98. What are you expecting to be able to do with 98 that you can't do with XP or ME. Quite a few of us have copies of 98 CD's laying around. This does not mean I want to install it on my working system and cause potential problems that could take it down.
Good luck

Richard

Hi trvlr !
Hi Richard (by rrlyon) !

Thanks for your replies. I will try to answer your questions: C: Drive > Windows ME
E: Drive > Windows XP
F: Drive > Windows 2000 PRO
H: Drive > Blank
I: Drive > Blank
D: Drive > Blank
A: Drive > Floppy
G: Drive > CD ROM
By Blank I mean no OS
No NTFS except 2000 PRO
Want to put 98 SE on H: Drive

PS: If it weren't for back up OS's. I would be down when I got the Blue Screen about three weeks ago. I recommend to all to have a back up OS. With the back up OS I could do some work I needed to do while going on Forums for help getting rid of the Blue screen in XP ( my main OS to use. just love XP)

PS: I will be back at my post at 1:00AM tonight. When Dad gets home at 6:00PM shortly , he will get on the computer. It is his computer. I am the manager. I guess Dad will always stick with ME. He bought the computer to trade stocks and for business information

Hi Statica:

Been away a day or two...

The system has XP/W2K/ME installed. Since ME is already there you cannot have both '9x and ME in together - unless you use an add-in boot-manager util. If you do not use such a util then ME will have to go - if you want '98 installed... The usual utils/items are Partition Manager (PM) and System Commander (SC). There are also a few freebies around - though I've no experience with them personally.

There is a rather complex "fudge" that may enable you to get both '98 and ME installed - but you don't really want to go that route...

How many physical drives installed? The partitioning info you provide tends to suggest two? The second being a single partitioned drive (D:) only?

Is the '98 CD you have a full version; also is it bootable version?

Also when you insert the '98 CD and boot up - is the CDROM set as first boot-device?
