Have virus,no Windows CD-what can I do?

March 28, 2011 at 17:48:12
Specs: Windows XP
I think we have viruses, malware, etc on a PC. Do not have a Windows CD/DVD. None came with the system and/or none was ever created. Want to reformat the hard drive & start over. What can I do? Where can I get a Windows OS CD (without paying for it, again)?
Thanks !!

"What can I do?"

Gee, I don't know? Did it occur to you to remove the virues & malware?

AVG anti-virus

Microsoft Security Essentials

Malwarebyte's Anti-malware

Can't get rid of all the viruses. They have become imbeded in the system. I'll try some more software to eliminate them.

My real question was how to restore the system without any original Windows disks.

I found a Windows OS disk, but do not have any authorization keys. Is there a place I can get the key(s) required to restore a Windows OS (found disks for XP & Windows Server 2003).

Viruses don't get embedded, you just have to know how to remove them. I supplied links to 4 excellent anti-virus & anti-spy programs, did you try any of them? Which program do you normally use?

I assume what you have planned is to completely wipe the hard drive & start from scratch? That means you will lose everything! So hopefully you've already backed up all your important documents, photos, videos, etc. And make sure you have backup copies of all your software & device drivers because they won't be on the XP disk. And what drivers are on the disk will be close to 10 yrs old. Also, if you have a SATA hard drive, reinstalling XP is a bit tricky. Hopefully you've looked into all these things.

To find your product key, use a program called Magical Jelly Bean - google will find it for you.

"Viruses don't get embedded, you just have to know how to remove them. "

Not true there are viruses called rootkit viruses that do this. You will need your Windows System disk because Anti-Viruses that remove these will sometimes destroy the system files. Call the manufacture to have them send you another one and don't lose it.
