What would you recommend for this, I have no spyware, viruses, removed xp2 because of a lot of bluescreens and could not determine problems, I went to harddrive manf and ran a test to check hard drive and memory and file structure everything physical passed but this is what I received, Would completely reinstalling Windows correct this,

File Structure Test Result:

Partition 1 (NTFS (120 GB) Main Drive) Result: Failed with critical Errors

The following errors were found while scanning the volume:
- One or more errors were found in the index

NOTE: Any report of possible errors in the file system tests are for
informational purposes only. We suggest you should consider testing with
the official file system diagnostic utilities for your operating system.
Seagate is not able to assist with troubleshooting or reviewing
file system test results.

Recommendation:
All selected physical diagnostics passed.

If you are not experiencing data loss and SeaTools reports File
System Structure errors, they may be caused by a lock-up or
failure to shutdown Windows correctly. Many times, these errors
may be repaired through normal system maintenance which
includes using the Windows provided "Defrag" and
"Scandisk / Chkdsk / Error Checking" utilities.

If you are experiencing a hardware error, you should isolate
the cause and replace the failing component. If you are unsure how
to proceed with repairs, contact a computer professional. After
completing any maintenance tasks, run SeaTools again to
verify that all errors have been repaired. If errors continue to
occur, the system may not be stable. Again, contact a computer
professional.

I have scandisked and defraged till I am blue in the face and everything is ok, also ran SFC several times and everything is there and fine.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks

A repair may fix.

If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.
I've often need to do this to repair something that had gotten corrupted and didn't want to do a clean install.

I believe that when I tried to do that it told me that I am running a different O/s and the files on the computer were newer than the ones on the disk which was xp and now I have xp1, so don't think that will work besides I put my disk in during sfc and there are all there and intact.

Cut your losses and save your time and just reformat and reinstall. If the disk is failing you'll knowthat soon enough. THere may be a "fix" here, and many will be offered, and one may even wor, for a while. By the time you have monkeyed around with this, you could have been computing again. Face the inevitable and move on!

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
