Have cable, AOL works, IE doesnt?

I have a cable roadrunner connection on my computer and am able to connect to the internet via cable(not dialup) using AOL, but no other program connects to the internet. Internet Explorer, Instant Messenger, Netscape, etc. fail to detect any connection. I can't fathom why this is happening if AOL is able to connect using the cable modem. Can anyone give me any ideas?

Maybe a firewall is preventing this or AOL wants you to use their internet with their program.

Try going into Control Panel / Internet Options / Connections tab /and Setup Internet Connection to establish a "non AOL" connection for your NIC to the LAN.
