a hardware firewall is a piece of equipment that routes internet traffic and acts as a firewall, instead of simply using a peice of software for a firewall. If you don't know what it is, then there's probably no reason you'll need one (unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket)! Look around onilne, or ask local places about them - you shouldn't have trouble finding them. The problem for you then would be configuring it.

a hardware firewall is better than a software firewall. and software firewalls do have vulnerabilities. a proxy server acts as a middle man...users send a request to it, and it goes to the web and grabs that url. the next time a user goes to the proxy server and asks for the same page, the proxy server just gets it from its cache, rather than going online again. theoretically, it's faster. but actually, it's slower. either your isp has a proxy server you can use, or you can try using a public proxy server (do a search on the web for them)
