format the 1st partition, install and run xp and then format the 2nd partition from within XP (my computer, right click on local disk d: and format).

Before format anything how do you reload your WinXp?
Do you have a disk? What does D:drive have on it?

Some computers keep there restore on a separate partition. Be such this not the case with your computer
