OS: WinXp
CPU/Ram: 512MB DDR
Comment:

I have a Athlon 2400+ (2G) with
512 MB DDR Ram (Original)

Harddrive in question is a brand new Seagate
Baracudda 7200 rpm ATA 120 G
---------------------
My problem is this: (as an example)

After about working with computer for about 8 hours I leave the computer idle when I sleep for another 8 hours.

In the morning I try to use the computer again, but somehow, even though I have over 400 MB Ram free
every thing I do takes time and the harddrive keeps
swapping like a maniac.

Open the webbrowser sets of a chain reaction, and if you
try open a movie, i could take over 2 minutes.

Why does this happen, the computer have'nt done
anything and all Ram is free???

check your power save functions, check and see if you hdd isn't turning off after a set amount of time. i know many of systems that would do just that.

definatly does sound like a power saving issue.

But you say system swaping in the subject. did the hard drive come out of a different system and you put it in yours with an OS and such allready on it? Or is the hard drive formated and os installed on it in this machine?

That's the first thing I thought of as well - your hard drive is going into "idle" mode, which means it powers down and all your current programs are stored to ram. When you come out of hibernation, your computer needs to re-page all of those programs. Just let it page it then try opening programs again. My suggestion is to just disable hard-drive hibernation.
