Harddrive problem shutting down XP

CPU/Ram: 486-466Mhz/64Mb

When I shutdown XP with the command shutdown -s -f then all is good. When I shutdown before logging on the BIOS has lost the Harddisk. After several reboots I'm back in business but the same problem keeps bothering me.

one thing i see is theres not near enough ram in the xp system. 64 meg is not enough. up it to 256, see the diff.
