I have just switched my pc on and it has stuck on the blue welcome screen. I restarted it in Safe Mode and it worked fine so i restarted it again and again it sticks on the blue welcome screen but this eventually showed my desktop (minus any icons) but the harddrive continuously clicks at this stage. Any ideas? Has my harddrive given up the ghost or is there a problem with my XP software?

Sure sounds like a hard drive that'll likely fail completely very soon.
Time to get a new hdd. Once you have that set up, reinstall your current hdd jumpered as slave and retrieve all the personal stuff you can.

If the hard drive is clicking it is time to buy a new hard drive. I would stop using the computer until you can get a new drive otherwise you could loss everything. Many hard drives come with software to transfer data from old to new. This would be the easy way of doing it.
