Hard Drives & Reformatting

Specs: Windows XP
Current working setup
Primary Master: 40GB HD with XP
Primary Slave: 40GB HD
Secondary Master: CD drive
Secondary Slave: DVD drive

With the current working setup, it works fine. But my primary master hard drive with XP has been clicking a lot and locking up ( old, beat up drive?)

So now I removed the primary master hard drive with xp, switch over my primary slave to master to install XP on it. I keep getting no primary drive detections on boot up.

The IDE cables & power molex are secured, the jumper setting on the hard drive I am not sure. There's no label on the hard drive telling which pins to set the jumpers so I've played with all possible setup and still the same error.

Any help would be appreciated.

identify the drive manufacturer and model. Go to the manufacturer web site and lookup the specs. It will tell you how to jumper

Not the ideal configuration. Either of these would be better:

Primary Master: 40GB HD with XP
Primary Slave: optical reader
Secondary Master: optical writer
Secondary Slave: 40GB HD

Primary Master: 40GB HD with XP
Primary Slave: optical reader
Secondary Master: 40GB HD
Secondary Slave: optical writer

If you don't know the master/slave jumper settings, check the HDD manufacturer's website.
