My hard drive is accessed after about 3 min. of not moving the mouse. If I close all applications it still occurs. I opened Task Manager to see what processes were in use. The only two that used the CPU during the hard-drive usage that were not before the hard drive kicks on are "cidaemon.exe and cisvc.exe" which are labled as SYSTEM files. I recently installed KaZaA and thought some bundled software might be the cause so I uninstalled it. I've tried system restore, but I received an "unable to restore" message. I can't leave my computer unattended for more than a five minutes or my hard drive will never shut-off. I'm about ready to format and start over, any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. The Hard disk won't stop running. Even when I am not doing anything. It started happening right after when I used Norton Ghost to clone my C drive onto D. It created a primary partition on my D drive. Well, the cloning with Norton Ghost never worked as I was trying to make my D bootable and remove C. In return I got this new problem of non-stop hard disk access. I tried formatting my whole D drive but disk is still runnning non stop. Also I am stuck with this primary partition on D which I can't get rid of. If you figure something out let me know.

I've been digging around and still can't come up w/ a solution. I need to re-phrase what I said in the first post, my hard drive will kick on when I'm using the mouse or typing, but won't kick off until the mouse is moved or a key is pressed. This happens on different user accounts, and the only time this doesn't happen is when I boot into SAFE-MODE. This is a WEIRD problem, someone please help. (I don't know why system restore isn't working either)

Both you guys might try this. Go start-run-type in msconfig-go to the start up tab-try unchecking all in the start up and then ok. It will then ask you to reboot. I had this problem and found that enabling one start up at a time that you can find which program is running in the background and causing your drive to continuously run. I went through the list and located a program that was causing the problem and left it unchecked.

Another thing to try is to run disk defragmenter. This made a real difference for my computer also.

Good luck!

Isn't this damn annoying? Sometimes it makes my computer impossible to use. But ... I just found out what it is. It's the indexing service that's supposed to make your computer faster! (well, searching, anyway) It's turned on and off through Start/Search/For File or Folders/Change Preferences.

The Change Preferences is how it's set up in Windows XP; I don't remember how it's done in the other versions of Windows.

I had the same problem... I figured it out how to turn it off in Windows XP and 2000.
1. Right click on My computer
2. Click Manage
3. Expand the 'Services and Applications' tree
4. Click on 'Indexing Service'
5. The toolbar should change. Click the Square Stop button.

This turns off the indexing service. I think this should do it. I just turned it off a few minutes ago, and my computer has been quiet ever since. Hopefully it stays like that.
