i'm having strange problems with xp and how it read's my D drive free space. i copied files from a cd into d drive and filled it up, i got a warning about free space so i deleted all the files i copied, however, i did not get my hard drive space back. i should have ~2gbs of space after deleting but xp doesn't recognise this, it registers as only 30mb space left...i'm very confused why, any help on how to solve this issue is greatly appreciated

You might try emptying the recycle bin if you haven't yet.

Have you tried running a Checkdisk on it? There might be some bad sectors taking up space. Also try defragmenting

Are you by any chance running Norton Anti Virus?

If so, go to configuration/advanced tools, and purge the protected files from the recycle bin.
