Specs:
1.6Ghz P4 Northwood
512 MB RAM (just installed one stick 2 days ago before problem happened)
40GB Western Digital Hard Drive
80GB Maxtor Hard DriveMy problem happened during a routine defragof the 40GB drive, when my computer crashed. Now my XP keeps doing the chkdsk command @ startup.
Whenever I let it check the disk though, it moves some of my files to a found.000 directory. Through this method, I have lost some of my files. I backed everything up and did a full format of the affected drive (including writing zeroes to it), hopefully to erase the MFT and re-partition the drive back to NTFS.
Formatting was difficult enough ; I had to download Western Digital's utility in order to get it to finish formatting properly. I ran diagnostics as well and the utility detected no problem with the physical aspect of the drive.
After it was done, I copied my files back onto the drive, and the same problem pops up. I don't want to run CHKDSK again because it keeps deleting some of my files per run.
Maybe this has something to do with the new RAM? Or is it the cable (two hard drives on the cable)? My other drive seems to be working properly.
Please help!
