I have a Maxtor 20gb hard drive with Windows Xp and Linux that has been in for about a year. Every once in a while when I am using the computer it will make a short squeek noise and stop spinning. So then Windows or Linux freezes up and when I restart the computer, the hard drive will not start up, so I have to hit the side of the computer with a screwdriver to get the hard drive to start up. What do you think is wrong with this hard drive and is it fixable?

i think the drive is bad, i would try to save my data as soon as possible, you can also run maxtors diagnostic program to confirm, but i would get a new drive.

note: if it is under 3 years old it is still under warranty.

And definitely run out and buy another Maxtor!!!! Now you know why they dropped the warranty to one year.

Thanks, I am going to get the Seagate this weekend. I have heard that seagates are very good quality.
