I was using my computer when the hard drive started to make a very strange noise. I restarted the computer only to find that nothing happens. When I try to run the system restore disks, it doesnt even recognize the cd rom drives. I am wondering if my hard drive is shot, or if there is something else I can do.

This is a typical hard drive failure. Many times when a hard drive fails, the BIOS is unable to detect other devices attached to the controller, such as optical drives. You can check this by unplugging the hard drive data cable, turning on the PC and seeing if the BIOS then detects the CD drive.

"OS: Windows 98"

Wrong forum? Restore disks for Win98 typically require a boot floppy

That being said - sure, unfamiliar sounds can be a sign of hard drive failure, immediate or impending

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.
