Hard Drive Noise in boot process
Name: mvoltage Date: July 30, 2004 at 09:14:22 Pacific OS: XP Home CPU/Ram: 1.1gig/512mb
Comment:
When my PC starts the hard drive makes a grinding noise. This happens at the point where I see XP on the screen as it loads the OS. Any suggestions?
On some boards the graphic accelerator fan are so small that they rattle when activated/activating.
I would check the fans in that unit before suspecting the hard drive, simply because of the construction of the hard drive makes it almost impossible to rattle without frying the plate-surface.

I had an ASUS a7v MOBO. I think that it is the Hard Drive that makes the noise, but I'm not certain. I have an ATI Radeon 9000pro graphics card.

If it's really the hard drive (which I also doubt), you will have to replace it. But fans are the normal source.

Hi mvoltage Ok , you say grinding noises yes?, obviously not like an industrial angle grinder but I feel you have no need to worry. As I speak(Type) the hdd is constantly kicking in and one might suggest that is similar to a "Grinding" type of noise. I would suggest that you watch your hdd light on the front of your pc with regard to activity at the same time when things are being proccessed. Wolfster

I had a maxtor 30gig that was doing the same thing. SMART said it was ok but I returned it to the store just the same. Right after it crashed. Maybe it's nothing, for your sake I hope not. But as a victim of a bad and costly drive crash, let me say this. BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP Back up that drive. Don't wait until it's too late like I did. You'll regret it. I did...

If in doubt replace the drive. Back up the noisey drive's data/critical files etc. first - then throw the drive out.... Re-install OS etc. afresh to new drive and restore backups etc. Safer than sorrier?
