dear experts
my harddrive is reading as the primary slave and i wish it to be primary master but after going into cmos/bios and seeing that its on auto-detect, i believe that it should detect it as primary master. the CD drive is set as secondry master for some reason
would this be the reason that i cant set the HDD as primary master? just to let you know i have a maxtor 40GB hdd and i took the jumnper cable off to see if that would make a change and it didnt at all. would having the CDRW as the secondry master maybe stopping me from setting the drive as primary master please help as i wish to set up a second HDD as slave and its not seeing it at all.
confused

Your message got me lost at the end. Did you setup your hard drive as a master by changing the pins?

Your HD is very likely jumpered wrong. You'll have to take the HDD out, and look at the diagram on the label of the drive showing where to put the jumper to make it the Master. There are 3 positions, Master, CS (Cable select) and slave.
One quick note, you said you wanted to add another HDD as a slave.
Be aware that on some HDD's, there are 2 possible setings for jumpers, one being for Master if there's no slave, and one being Master if there IS a slave. Not all though, the drive diagram will tell you.

Good Luck

Make sure that the harddrive is on the end connector (black) and not on the middle connector (gray).

Hope this helps,

Are you sure you are plugging the hard drives into the correct IDE? PRIMARY IDE? Go step by step. Unplug all the drives and make sure the jumpers are setup right for hard drive 1 as master. Get ribbon cable that is connected to PRIMARY IDE slot. Connect hard drive 1 to ide connector at the end of the ribbon cable (not middle connector). Go to CMOS and set hard drive 1 to autodetect. Does it recognizes the drive as master?

Main HDD, Set to Master in IDE slot 1 on board, Add Slave HDD, set to Slave.
Main CD/DVD drive set to Master in IDE slot 2 on board, Again add Slave CD drive, set to Slave.
IDE Slot 1 is Primary, IDE Slot 2 is Secondary
Hope this helps

Wouldn't recommend setting up slave hard drive on primary ide with along with the master hard drive. It is better to set it in Secondary IDE as primary or slave for performance reasons.

Just a minor correction. It is not necessary to put the Master on the end connector if you plug the drives Master and Slave. It only has to be on the end connector if you use cable select.
