Unfortunately not. These errors may mean that you have a corrupt hard disk or a corrupt Windows installation. Start the computer in Safe Mode, and back up all your important files to another hard drive or recordable CD. Then, reformat the drive, and check your disk for errors. If ScanDisk finds any errors, fix them. Then, reinstall Windows XP with a "clean install."

yes, the hard disk error can corrupt the system files.

you may also check your RAM.

Assuming you can get booted at least into safe mode (keep pressing the F8 key as the computer starts up), you will want to click the Start button, click Run, and type in chkdsk /f
If it asks you schedule a check the next time the computer starts, choose Yes. Reboot.

Good luck

Clicked submit too soon. lukeles is right about RAM--and it's probably a good idea to check RAM first with a memtest boot floppy or something. (Running chkdsk on a computer with bad RAM could cause major file corruption.)

Again & again?

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Thankyou for all your replies, the problem was sorted, it turned out that a program that was recently installed caused the hard drive to fail. Managed to get the computer to start up in safe mode and did a system restore to before the program was installed.
