I am getting a hard drive I/O error when I try to boot. I want to run scandisk or some utility to see what is wrong, but I can't boot except with the WinXP CD (it just want to reformat my drive). How can I boot to a DOS prompt so I can check my drive?

Boot your PC while holding down F8 key. Then select Safe Mode with Command Prompt and press Enter.

Or Boot your PC with a win98/Me startup disk in drive A.

Note: There is no DOS in win xp.

Hope this helps. Bye

There are a number of utilities provided by hard drive manufacturers. If everything is correctly connected physically as well as correctly configured in the BIOS. I would recommend downloading a boot utility disk from the drives' manufacturer in which you can run low-level diagnostics if it can read/detect the drive. Good luck.

If you boot from the WinXP CD, you can get into the Emergency Repair Console. It will give you an option when the CD install loads up. Once you get to the console, and if it can get into your hard drive, then type chkdsk. Type chkdsk /? for a list of things it can do, one of them will check your hard drive for physical errors and such, you want that option probably.

If the drive has failed or you fail to resolve try www.computer-recovery.com they may at least recover any important data that you may have on the drive.
