Hard Drive Formatting stuck at 51%

December 12, 2009 at 14:04:37
Specs: Windows XP

I am formatting my original HD on my Dell Inspirion
600m using the Windows XP disk that came with the
computer and it is stuck at 51% while formating. I have
shut down and tried it three times and it hangs at 51%
each time. What can I do? Do I need a new HD?

How to partition and format a hard disk in Windows XP

Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed,
freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

when there is no operating system, mine is gone now that I am
half way through reformatting?

The hard drive diagnostic tools run from bootable floppy or CD
you will need to identify the make of drive you have ( Seagate, Maxtor, etc) and get the right diagnostic tool. Read the instructions on the website for how to create the bootable disc.
