Comment:

My hard drive crashed and I used wipe out and reformated my hard drive and reinstalled xp pro. Now every time I boot up it goes thru a scan of my hard drive and I get many (50) "File record segment ### is unreadable". I also have some problems installing programs and it takes awhile to open any windows file. It is formated as a NTFS system. Is this hard drive scrap? Unfortunately it is just over my warranty period.

Thanks,
Linda

you should get a utility which will check for errors on the drive. Go to you HDD's website and they should have a scan program.

It sounds like you have a lot of bad sectors on the drive. At this point I would buy a new HDD.

If there are enough bad clusters on the crashed drive xp will not work. It sounds like you have a phyiscal scratch on the platter and the drive is useless for future use. There are work arounds that can be tried, but they come back to bite you on the booty later. Bite the bullitt and get another drive.
Maxtor and Western Digital are good cost friendly drives. Seagate is another good brand allbeit a bit too pricey.
Just follow the directions that come with the drive.
And while you're shopping for a drive, pick up some cd-r's and back up any data on a regular basis.
