While downloading a video file last night my browser locked up. I re-booted the machine and got an error popup which said something to the effect of navapw32.exe can not run because apwutil.dll not found. Several restarts later I was still having the problem.

Believing these to be Norton Anti Virus files, I thought maybe I would uninstall norton and reinstall it. After uninstalling and re-booting I get an error message before the machine opens windows that says your hard drive has errors.

I tried re-installing Norton (I have a gateway 70 S and am using their utilities disk) but it kept giving me a 1304 error due to my not having access to a Symantec file in the shared files folder.

Meanwhile I still get the Hard Drive error on re-boot so I ran PC doctor and I failed the Surface Scan test. I went into Dos and did a GWSCAN and tested the hard drive and got a big red FAILURE.

I am unable to get into safe mode by hitting F8.

Do I need to go out and buy a new hard drive or is there a fixable problem here?

Which video was it? You may have a virus. There are viruses out (Klez and Yaha) that disable your Norton Antivirus. Go to www.symantec.com and download the Klez remover and run it on your computer.

So the hard drive errors, is that part of the virus or do I have a real problem?

Any virus is a real problem. Do what JROB told you and post back.

I seriously doubt it's caused by a virus. First off, the file would have to be completely downloaded and run to infect your system.

I would be more likley to believe you hard drive started to go out and the part that went was holding the data for NAV. It certainly won't hurt to do a virus scan but I would be willing to bet you are having a normal hard drive failure and it's time to replace it.

If you were downloading from Kazaa or P2P like that then nothing needs to fully download because P2P software is a hub for viruses and hacking.

Anyways, my sister had a similar virus that stomped her Norton and was slowly decaying her files. It was the yaha (spelling?) Virus. How old is the hard drive?

It's only a year old.

I'll be fiddling with it tonight and post results.

It wasn't Yaha or Klez, neither was picked up on the virus scan
