Get the makers diag software and run that scan. That is the most reliable.

For a quick examination of your hard drive--not as thorough as diagnostic software--you can sign in to PC Pitstop.

Scandisk is shakey.
The serious tool is SpinRite.

No doubt about it, SpinRite is a great tool, but it's not free. Find it here.

Go with what Setishock says - get the diagnostic tool from the manufacturer's web-site - generic tools can't be totally trusted.

Depends on the generic tool, johnr. Here in the shop, we use SpinRite and have never had it fail us. Sometimes the manufacturer's diagnostic software is unavailable. Also, there have been occasions when SR found a problem (or potential problem) the manufacturer's diagnostics did not.

How old is the hard drive? Who makes it? Please post back and let us see from there.
