hard drive data transfer slow on P4

Comment:
I am baffled. I just purchased a new Dell P4 2.4 GHz system with a 30 GB hard drive. I also have an 80 GB hard drive, which I installed on the same IDE cable as the 30 GB hard drive. The OS is on the 30 GB drive, set "cable select." The other drive is also set "cable select."
The problem I have involves a slow data transfer rate when I play large videos from the slave drive (80GB drive). They just sputter. I never had this problem with this drive in my PIII 550 MHz. I don't understand. My OS is XP home and NTFS is on both drives.

I should mention that I formerly formatted the 80 GB drive with my Win 2K system. Does XP format the NTFS differently? If so, could that be my problem?
Thanks again.

i hear putting them on cable select is bad...that's the old way of doing things.
win xp puts the hard drives on pio mode by default. you have to go to device manager, then the ide channel, and switch it to dma mode.

I don't see an area where I can go to the IDE channel. Could you guide me on the swtich to dma mode?
Thanks, Bryan

Actually, I just figured that out. I just didn't see it. You are right in that the HD is set in PIO mode. I'm not sure why. I don't have the option to change it either. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Try to go in Device Mnager, IDE ATA\ATAPI controllers, and then select Properties for Primary IDE Channel. Select Advanced Setting, after Transfer mode. Same for Secondary IDE Channel.
