Simple maths. 26 letters = 26 partitions. Start combining partitions by the look of it. For interest sake how did you write information to drives that can't be seen and why on earth would you need more than 26 partitions?

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Take out 1 or 2, leave the ones you want to access.

if you're using NTFS you can map a drive to a folder, rather than a drive letter

"Big" hard drives? 80Gb isn't particularly huge these days. My PC came with a 160Gb drive and I've installed a second 120Gb. Each drive only uses a single letter.

Sounds as if the drives maybe came from older machines, when Windows had smaller limits on the partition sizes. Shouldn't be a problem with XP, so get something like Partition Magic and start combining partitions. Just make sure they are backed up first, especially if you're changing file system types, eg FAT32 to NTFS, and read the manual carefully!

The following sequence will let you assign a drive letter to a path, but I can't think of many reasons you would want to!

Click Start and click the Run command. In the Run dialog box, type diskmgmt.msc and click OK.
In the Disk Management console, right click on the partition for which you want to change the letter and click the Change Drive Letter and Paths command.
In the Change Drive Letter and Paths dialog box, click on the drive letter and click the Change button.
In the Change Drive Letter or Path dialog box, click the down arrow to the right of the Assign the following drive letter option and select the new drive letter. Click OK.
Read the information on the Confirm dialog box. It's important that you do not have programs installed on the drive on which you change the letter, as that can create problems. Click Yes when you're ready to change the drive letter.

This was common in DOS days when some programs insisted on running from the root of a drive, so you could fool them into thinking the folder they were installed in was actually G:\ or whatever. Assigning letters to folders just increases the number you can use, though, which is not what you want!
