I booted up to this pleasant msg:

SMART Failure predicted on Hard Disk 1: Maxtor 98196h8-(ps)

Warning: Immediatly back up your data and replace your hard drive.

A failure may be imminent.

Is the drive really toast?
is there any way to test it?

please let me know

Tricky

Hard to tell, some people get the message and their drive dies, some people get it with no effect. Run CHKDSK from the Start menu, if it comes back with no problems you should be ok.

I wouldn't take the chance. As a LAN administrator I have seen this same message a number of times, and failure is, in fact, always imminent -- whether it is a total hard drive failure or a slow degradation. My advice is to follow the warning's suggestion and back up your data and replace your hard drive. With today's prices, it's cheaper to replace the drive and save your data than to face the daunting alternative.

You might want to download and run Maxtor's disk diagnosing program; it's free and easy to use. Could tell you for sure what condition you're drive is in.

Check this site. It will test your drive and tell you what (if any) problems there are.
