Sounds like the drive could be going bad. Even if it's brand new it could be bad.

Another thing could be the power supply. If you have a USB devices plugged in, extra fans and maybe two CD drives. You may not have enough power. It may work fine sometimes then not the next.

in control panel...select 'admin tools'
then select 'event viewer' the window will open into a dual pane window...in the left pane select 'system' and in the right pane scroll down to look at any of the trouble issues. You can read what where and then you can highlight the line and click on it to bring up further information of what the problem might be.

usually it will be a bad block on the disk. If this is the case then you can run chkdsk and possibly repair the issues and be ok. if it is bad and can't be repaired through windows chkdsk then it is time to act and get a new one...

Now that still doesn't mean that the HD can't be fixed and reused. It just means that windows can't fix it and a different utillity has to be used ( the manufacture's repair utillity would be the best) and it may make the operating system unusable or wiped clean.

I have saved many a bad disc this way!

Actually, it sounds like a DMA issue, depending on how the PC's slowing down. (After all, have you ever heard of a master/slave setup with SATA?)

In the Device Manager, check your Primary and/or Secondary IDE, and make sure their transfer modes are DMA.

If that's the problem, the question becomes WHY you're being knocked down to PIO, My guess? There's either a problem with the cable, or the drive. Possibly the MB, but that'd be reaching.

An easier solution would probably be to winhlp.com and apply their fix.

If you have reinstalled a few times and it is going bad then it is either going to be software that you are installing or a failed HDD

have you followed the advice above the ran a check on the drive to see if it is ok??

cheers
