Hangs before login

I repaired an "NTLDR Missing" problem. Now I get past the Windows XP Professional logo screen on startup but just before the blue Welcome and login screens would appear, the system hangs with a black screen and a large white cursor. The cursor is not frozen, but the system never goes any further. This happened after I used the Repair option of the installation process. I also ran chkdsk, but the problem remains. Would appreciate any relevant suggestions.

Haven't tried that, but wouldn't that option come up after the place where I get stuck?

Not necessarily....
When you boot up, start tapping F8 immediatly after the POST and see if ytou can get the boot menu. Try Safe Mode, then see if you have any Restore Points.

I tried starting up in Safe Mode, but I just got the same black screen with big white cursor and "Safe Mode" in the four corners. I finally gave up and reformatted and reinstalled.
