Comment:

Whenever I insert the HalfLife CD and click Install HalfLife, I get the prompt "16 bit Windows Subsystem: config.net. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. It has two options, Close and Ignore. It won't let me install it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Halflife work fine on my XP! But diffrent hardware makes diffrent problems... Have you tried updating video drivers? Or use XP program compatability wizard? There is a solution out there somewhere.

/me slaps Batman for giving out incorrect info on a help forum.

HL and ALL of its various mods work perfectly fine on Windows XP

As ian said we all your specs.

CPU
PSU
Mobo
Soundcard
Ram
Graphics card

Also we need to know what speed and type your ram is, system temps, graphics drivers and what flavour of XP you are running.

I have the same problem. Installed Half-Life on a new eMachines 1.3Gz Celeron with 256MB Ram on Windows XP home; integrated 3D graphics. The game worked fine on my 266 MhZ Compac laptop running Win98.

IS there a patch or anything? The program doesn't seem to recognize the CD when it asks me to insert the CD from the game's main menu. It is a bonafide CD that I purchased about 2 years ago and is fine otherwise.
