half life online games

when i first installed half life and counter strike on xp, i couldnt play any counter strike games online.all that would happen was that there'd be some stuff on the console about the won authentication blah blah blah and thats it. I Reinstalled hl and cs and it worked then, but the problem has happened once again and this time reinstallation dont work.consequently AOL hangs when i try to sign off after attempting to play cs online.this problem seems to happen with half life in general,because deathmatch classic didnt work either,yet quake3,soldier of fortune 2 and other games work fine.this problem doesnt happen on my other comp with win 98.someone said something about disabling inbuilt firewall in xp

disable the firewall and get one from www.kerio.com or www.zonelabs.com. and if i remember correctly halflife is not actualy compatible with xp so it might be a good idea to run it in 98 compatibility mode (right click the exe and select the relevant tab)
