Comment:

so I came home one night and my computer seemed to have
restarted itself and I keep getting the error message on
start up that the "hal.dll file is missing or corrupt". I
went into the recovery counsel and tried to expand the
file from the cd to my hard drive and it keeps saying
Access Denied and I can't logon to my admistartor
passord, everytime I type LOGON in the counsel notihng
happens. I then tried bootcfg \list and it says there are
none to be listed and when I try to do bootcfg \rebuild
it says I have to run chkdsk. So I run chkdsk \r and it
runs forever and then after that I try everything else
again and nothing works...what's goin on? any help please?

Copying (expanding) the hal.dll file via Rec Console often doesn't seem to work.....

Your best bet is probably to just perform a repair re-install of XP - that should fixit.

GoodLuck
