A friend of mine lives several states away and was given a computer by someone he works with. When it boots it gives him an error that the hal.dll file is missing or corrupt. He doesn't have internet access or an installation cd. Is there any other way to rebuild the hal.dll file? Thanks, Gryphon327

If it's an OEM system (like Dell, Compaq, etc), there might be a way. They normally have a second partition on the drive with a recovery image that will restore the system to the way it came from the factory. This is accomplished by hitting a special key(s) during the boot. Tell your friend to go to the manufacturer's web site and look for 'restore or reformat' instructions.
