Comment:

After, "cleaning," my system with a application to speed it up, I can now not log on at all.
Get error message the following is missing or corrupt:
system32\hal.dll

Having looked around it seems that I should boot from my XP disk and enter the recovery console.
My problem is that even with teh XP disk in the drive, I still get the same error message. It doesn't get me to the recovery console.
I have changed the boot sequence to make it boot from the cD drive first. But that isn't helping. Still the same error message.

Anyone think of anything to help?

You have to 'boot' from the XP CD to access the Recovery Console or do a Repair install.

Are you watching the screen. You need to respond to a 'boot from CD' message (you only have a couple of seconds). Or it will try and boot from the hard drive.

Not even getting that option.

I checked that the disc was okay on my desktop. I'm starting to think the drive might not be working properly

The disc drive not working properly is a problem. But you don't need to actually enter the repair consol to fix hal problems.

Boot to CD and when you get to the prompt to load SCSI drivers and press F6 press F5 instead. This will get you to the hal section and allow you to reset the Hal for your computer.
