Comment:

Short story - PC crashed, got blue screen and memory dump message. When I rebooted it says hal.dll missing or corrupt. Please replace (or something like that). BIOS indicates that there is no primary master IDE drive. I have the WinXP Pro CD and have gotten as far as the recovery console but am afraid to proceed because I don't know exactly what to do. FIXBOOT seems likely but I'm cautious.

What should I do? Reinstall is NOT an option.

If the BIOS does not recognise you have a hard drive then you will not be able to repair the XP Installation!!

You need to find out why the hard drive is not recognized in BIOS first....

You could try and run fixboot to repair the MBR (master boot record) but it sounds like your partition table is screwed up.

There is a boot disk for free download called ULTIMATE BOOT DISK and it contains a program that will recover lost partitions as well as MBR's
