Specs: Windows xp sp2, Intel P4 2.4g/ 768mb
hal.dll missing or corrupt showed up overnight by itself. System will not boot XP. Single harddrive is Sata drive on a PCI controller card. There are two cd drives. Neither will open the tray. Bios recognizes both cd drives. When system starts up little green light on each cd drive comes on briefly but tray won't open. System will boot from floppy (Win98 se) with cd support but cd still will not open tray. Harddrive is not recognized (NTFS format). Can't boot from cd because can't open tray to insert cd. What is preventing cd drives from operating properly? When booting from floppy how do I recognize and write to NTFS Sata harddrive to replace hal.dll? Bios boot seq is set to (1) floppy (2) scsi (3) cdrom. Making cdrom #1 and floppy #2 appears to have no effect.

Small pin hole near the front of the CD drive drawer. Push a paper clip into the hole, and a small sharp knife to help the drawer to open.

Thanks for reply. got cd problem resolved so can boot from cd. Don't have orig xp pro cd so can't start recovery console from cd. Tried using Ghost 10 recovery environment from cd. It starts boot but hangs with blank grey screen and mouse pointer only. I need way to copy good hal.dll file onto the NTFS windows drive from a floppy. Windows won't start w/o good hal.dll. Tried booting from floppy and using nts4dos. nts4dos recognizes ntfs drive and all partitions fine but is unbelievably slow-- so slow it can't do the job. I don't want to pull the drive and install on another machine to do the copy.
