sorry i posted this message somewhere else and now i just found out where to post it...haha. Anyways i just recently was playing a multiplayer online game and this person is talking trash. So i talk a little trash too and then he informs me that he has my IP address. He tells me the IP address and it isnt my computer but it is my mom's.
I am on a router from Linksys on my own computer. He then says that i live in a certain state and he is correct. Then tells me that i live in a certain city but he's not correct. Do i have anything to fear? Is there anything i can do?
Thanks if you can help me

hi,
i can give you my ip right now you can trace it will come back to a diffrent province then where i am living ..in a city 450 miles away.pretty meaningless when they say they have your ip scare tactics is all it is.
keltik

Well what i meant was do i have anything to fear for my computer...not for me...its a little 15 year old kid i dont care about him :).
Thanks

alright well thanks for the info. I just got a little freaked cause he knew that stuff. Im not that great in knowing all the stuff about computers, just kicking butt in the games :) haha. Thanks for everything though.

Knowing your IP address won't help him, unless you help him. First, he'd have to get past your router, which has a firewall in it. Then he'd have to find your computer on your network and get past its defenses (software firewall, etc).
It's not hard to find other people's IP address. That info is sent on every communication your computer/router sends, so that the data can find its way back. It's like sending a self-addressed stamp envelope along with a request...so your requested info gets sent back.
ISP's also have their own network of routers. Computers that connect to a certain router will get a certain ip address. That's why he got the city wrong...your computer got its address from a router in that city.

So then I should be fine about my computer being hacked or anything right?
Thanks for the info already given

Virtually anybody's PC can be hacked...but, you being behind a router, etc....it would be extremely difficult.
A person has to be able to do so (rare)....and when those type folks do go to the trouble, what they are hacking has to be worth it.
99% of home users PCs simply are not worth that type of time and attention.

I really am bothered by this hacking issue... i was playing in a game and one time i was having a hard time connecting to the game and so one player asked my ip address and said that it would be helpul so that he would know if i was blocked from his computer, since he was the one creating the game... i know it sounds stupid but i gave it out... will he be able to access my files? i'm also in a router...
i can understand basketball... it is really freaking me right now...
