Hello,
How can I create or change via the group policy editor,a standard user account to make it able to run the windows automatic updates?
Hope this will enough clear for you...
Thanks in advance.
Ludo

Once the admin runs windowsupdate, it applies to the standard users. Think about it :), why should you do the windowsupdate from the standard user side, when the reason for limiting the ability to modify windows was the main intention of creating standard user and the admin user account. :)

JB,
I've got about 50 PCs in my company and for security reasons, the users cannot get admin rights. Then, to avoid logging on with my admin password to each PC, I would like the windows automatic updates to run even if an user with his standard user rights is logged on.

M$ do software precisely for this purpose, called SMS. You install it on a server, give it a list of machine names & the updates you want to apply, any software at all & it will run during the night. It has Wake On Lan so can power up machines & when finished power them down, that's the good news, the bad news is it ain't cheap! but you could try getting a price for a fifty machine network to see if it is feasible. I find it invaluable but then I didn't pay for it.:-)

Just had a look on the M$ site, they are offering a free download and 120 day evaluation with no reduction in features or usage. A 5 machine version appears to be about $300 but maybe you also need to look at IBM's similar software called Tivoli Manager. I have used both and have no preference but with 3,000 machines on our network it is a vital tool.

I agree with bobs suggestion, SMS is a very nice tool for exactly that purpose, its what i use in my 50 PC Lan.
I might be wrong here, but from SP2 upwards, is it not the case that once the administrator sets the windowsupdate settings on the machine, ie - 'Download and install updates at a specified time' it will do this with or without admin privelidges?
