grey task bar no programs work?

me being a fool decided to see what some of then options i dont use do, i cant remember what i did but now whenever i turn on my computer its has a very slow start up and when i finally get in the task bar is grey and nearly all of the programs wont work im have no idea what ive done(think it might be something to do with msconfig) but i have done alot of downloading lately so that makes me think it may be a virus, prob me messing somethink up though can anyone help i cant live without my computer and need it for work ... thanks

Did you try to do a System Restore??? If not, try it.....

yeah i tried a system restore the earlyest it went back was to the day before it meesed up but even tha didnt fix it i dont know why it doesnt go back further..
Summary: I went to reboot xp home and there is no icons or task bar no hot keys work when i try to log in as administrator it says invald files in safe mode it does the same thing tryed to repair though the xp...
