I've run many firewalls:
Sygate pro
Norton Internet Security
ZoneAlarm
ICF (windows)
Tiny Personal FW
Black Ice
and now Panda.
The trick with firewalls is understanding them; take some time and read "all" about the one you choose. FWIW, I'm running Panda now and find it runs without interfering with other apps and easy for anyone to configure. I'm running the Platinum version which comes bundled with Panda's anti-virus. You can install a 30 free trial on Panda's website. Should you opt to purchase it, don't buy from Panda; go to www.pricewatch.com, there you can purchase an OEM single copy for no more than $20.

Concerning whats running in the background:
Black Viper Click on the Windows XP Services link to the left.

If you want a free solution, try Sygate.
Zonalarm is very resource hungry.

My friend http://blkviper.com rules! I was having problems with my Norton antivirus because the services that I did not need in win2k were memory hogging and preventing critical Norton antivirus processes from running and I turned off the bs services I did not need and installed nav again and it worked great and then when I ran a virus scan found adware Trojan called
Adware.ipinsight and I killed it lol.
