I attempted to update to SP1 when it first came out but had problems. I did not backup the existing system. I want to try again but for sure I don't want to have to Re-Install XP. Is is safe to update to SP1 providing that I backup the existing XP system files when asked? I have all of these patches on my system now, will it overwrite these or am I going to have a lot of extra files on my HD? Thanks for the help...

L Sanders Sr:
Service Packs are a collection of past Microsoft patches. As I understand it, those already on your computer will not be installed again by the Service Pack, only the ones which are missing.
I was in your position last year after installing numerous patches, then installing SP1. Despite some of the problems users had with SP1 (now SP1a), my computer suffered no ill effects.
I'm not saying you won't encounter problems with SP1a--no two computers are alike--I'm merely offering my own experience.
But with all the well-known security holes in Microsoft's software, you'd probably be better off installing the Service Pack than not.
Sincerely, Solarian

To play it save, I would set a restore point before installing SP1. XP does, I believe, attempt to set a restore point before a service pack installation, but just to be sure --
Then, if you have any problem, you can restore your system.
Good luck. Don't think you should have problems with this.

I did the update to SP1 tonight then went to Windows Update to load some patches for SP1. So far.....so good. Thanks Gentlemen.
