I have a ghost image of my PC with Windows 2000 and I now want to buy a new faster PC with Windows XP Pro, can I easily transfer the contents of the old PC to the new PC with the ghost file? I have been told that if the chipset is different in the new PC (which I guess it would be) then I would not be able to do it. Is there a way around this?

Which version of Ghost?
What exactly do you mean by "contents"?
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Is your intent to create a dual boot setup? What version of Ghost are you using? There are issues with many versions of Ghost and SATA harddrives. I have 2003 and it won't work with my SATA primary harddrive in Windows mode.
If all you want to do is transfer your personal data you don't need to use Ghost for that. Just burn the data to disk or transfer over a Network.

You won't be able to use the image to create a dual boot system. The image is probably set up for drive C: and that's the only drive letter that it will work on. Since the new system will come with XP Pro setup on drive C:, your image will not work.

You can't use a Ghost image from one pc on another. You would need the same hardware, & would then end up with windows 2000.
You can use ghost explorer to copy files over.
But I think you should use The files & settings transfer wizard in xp. This will allow you to create a floppy, that you run on the win 2000 pc. Because the transfer file could be very large, you would need to network, or create a folder of the transfer files & burn to dvd or copy to usb.

I use Ghost 2003 to backup my primary partiton to a folder on my secondary partition. I have SATA 1? & have no problems.
Ghost 2003, doesn't support ghosting to usb, you need to load usb dos drivers. Hirens boot cd has ghost 11, which looks the same as 2003, this has the facility to load usb DOS drivers. Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Are you starting the Ghost process from within WinXP to image?
I used to image directly to DVD with IDE drives when I still used Win98se.
I can't get 2003 to burn to optical disk or to my USB external. If memory serves me correctly I do have it load the drivers but then it can't find the harddrive to image from. Keep in mind I am starting the image process from within WinXP. The computer reboots, appears to be starting the process, and then sits there not finding the disks. I end up needing to reset my active partition and run fixboot and fix MBR because Ghost creates a temporary partition and marks it as active.

Generally I create a ghost image from within Xp. I save this to my other partition.
Recently, I created a ghost image from within Xp to a DVD. This would then be bootable.
I think, there were issues with early versions of ghost writing with some dvd's.http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...
The latest version is 2003.793. Unfortunately, symantec live update doesn't work anymore. But I did read somewhere that there is an archive on the symantec site that allows you to update. I'll have a look for it.
2003 doesn't support ghosting to usb, you need to load the usb dos drivers.

Has more info on this, but as I said before Hirens boot cd allows you to load the dos drivers.
I think thishttp://service1.symantec.com/Suppor...
is the way to update from symantec archives.

I moved to WinXP about a year ago when I built a new system with a SATA HD. I had previously used Ghost 2003 with Win98se and burned to optical disk.
When attempting to do the dame with the new system I couldn't get Ghost to burn to optical disk OR to external drive.
I suspect now that it is because my version of Ghost is 2003.775, which is what is on the CD. I have searched for the last hour and can't find any place to get any updates. Symantic site simply states my version is currently up to date. I think my version not only doesn't support USB drives but doesn't support SATA drives either. I have been using the WinXP utility but have not tried restoring with it yet.

Go here http://service1.symantec.com/Suppor...
I think if you follow the instructions, it will copy the update files from the Symantec Archive.
There is more info about SATA drives here

A few months ago the updated files were on a server at Princeton University. I can't find them there now.
I found this http://rs6.rapidshare.com/files/188...
If you are still stuck, let me know.

I finally got Ghost to update to 2003.793. I imaged my C partition to DVDR (2 disks) and ran an integrity check, which passed.
What is the rapidshare avi about?

Sorry, I think I made a mistake.
I googled looking for the updated files to version 793. & came up with that.
I tried to download it, but couldn't, so I couldn't check it was the correct file.Anyway, glad you are now able to image to dvd.

I usually don't bother updating software if it is working OK. I never even thought to try updating when I assembled this rig. Funny, Ghost 2003 tray app doesn't update to 793 but Ghost Start does. Anyway, thanks for the heads up and help. I wish I could find those files in downloadable format instead of updating the working program. Next time I need to install Ghost 2003 I may not be able to get the updates. I have no plans to go to Vista anytime soon so 2003 should be good for awhile.
