I just did a clean install of XP, and wanted to backup my C: drive with Norton Ghost. When I restarted my computer to begin the backup process, ghost freezes as soon as it opens - in pc dos. Dos also freezes when I try to go back to Windows. Ghost must have made a new Fat partition to run Dos, and I am not able to see my NTFS partions (Windows). I can't just delete the Fat partition. I either want go back to windows and forget about the backup, or finish creating the backup. I am able to use Dos. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
My system:
- mobo : abit ic7 max3
- drive 1)c: + ?: = parallel ide hard drive (Dos - FAT + windows - NTFS)
- drive 2)?: = SATA drive (storage - NTFS)
- *two cd-rw drives
- *no floppy drive

Just re-format and re-install XP. If you can't even do anything in a dos prompt, it's probably your best bet. You sure don't want to halfass fix it and have it go belly up when you get it re-loaded with all your other software.

I could, but I got everything set up correctly, and ghost shouldn't have changed anything on the windows partition, so it should be possible. I *am* able to use Dos. If I do another re-install, Ghost will freeze up again on back-up - which would make your suggestion a "Ghost-buster".

Just set a restore point once you re-format and get everything you want installed. It's been my experience with most backup software like Ghost, that they are a hell of alot more trouble than they are worth. You be the "Ghost-Buster" and don't put that crap back on your PC.

You can try to boot from your XP CD and delete any partitions that ghost added. Other than that the best thing to do is what I already suggested. I'm not trying to be harsh, but I had Ghost and like I said it caused more problems than it ever cured.
I gave it away, for just the kind of crap your dealing with right now. Good luck.Wesley

If want to try and fix it check out this website. From what it says, you have to have a version of dos from windows 98.

I tried using Dos from win 98. Unfortunately the article did not help. The article reads "Ghost should launch", and Ghost does launch, and immediately freezes.

I tried to delete the Fat partition, and was not able to boot to Windows, even though the NTFS partition (with my OS) changed back to C:. Now I did another clean install, and tried to make a backup again, and I am in the same place with Ghost - frozen.
I used Ghost last month to back up a friend's system, and had no problems. The only differences:
1>I have no flopply drive*
2>I have 2 optical drives
3>I have 5 other installed programs (all small and shouldn't have made any difference)
4>I have a soundcard rather than on-board sound (with different apps and drivers)*My guess is that Ghost scans for a FDD when it opens in Dos.
Any other suggestions?
